Soul journey and comedy of errors rolled into one, AT RISK throws a Back East addict into a room full of rambunctious and stubbornly illiterate Southwest youth. Bob Klein may have come 2000 miles from his original home town to redeem himself from a life of dereliction, but all he finds in cowboy country is a tour of adolescent hell that challenges the very precepts of his sanity, not to mention the idea he could be a teacher. Whether he loses his job begins to pale next to the larger question of whether he will lose his mind. On what planet did he get the idea that today's kids, especially these kids, are disposed to read books? And is this any kind of job for a man trying to attain a year of sobriety? Rife with frank detail, the real story of AA, and a plethora of cultural observations, AT RISK blends sheer entertainment with the poignancy of tough existential fiction. In the end, those rowdy kids may be his truest signposts to enlightenment ... whether Mr. Klein survives Mustang Valley High School or not.

I liked the raw honesty of the main character in his desperate effort to cope with teaching high school students who are not well-oriented to authority. Any story that puts us in touch with our fragile humanity is good for the soul.Product details

At Risk eBook R G Philips Ellie Bockert Augsburger Reviews
This is a must read for any teacher, with something resembling an intellect, considering teaching in Hee-Haw rural schools, at least in Arizona. Non-educators will find this an important look into a slice of the public education teaching world in the Southwest. Take John Keating (the late Robin Williams) from Dead Poet's Society and throw him in front of the offspring from Deliverance, and that's what you have here. It's highly relevant and entertaining reading and it makes you wonder how this guy holds out. The only drawback, so to speak, is that it put me right back in the classroom when I had the unfortunate experience of taking a job at a hick district in Northern Arizona. The interactions between teacher and student, and the author's introspection that follows, alone make this a worthwhile read. Get ready for To Sir With Love, only this time there ain't much love from the kiddos.
